We found a classic 1940′s vintage frame house with lots of character.  We’ll be starting our decorating from scratch since we sold everything we owned before the trip.  How lucky am I to have a completely blank slate?!

What grabbed me most about this film is the way Lucy’s home is decorated.  I’ve always wanted to decorate my home like an art gallery with white walls and simple, clean features that highlight the special pieces I have collected over my life.  I also love the message she conveys about taking time to concentrate on what you are actually doing. – A special thanks to Simple Lovely for  featuring this on her blog so that I can share it with you.

My new fixation is pairing a colored pant with a graphic black & white top.  The overall look is really modern and edgy.  Check out some cute combinations I put together and my style tips on how to wear them…

{ STYLE TIPS } To achieve this look, keep the colored pant really BRIGHT!  No muddy colors like maroon or forest green!  For the graphic print, go for something bold, vivid, and striking.

{ STYLE TIPS } While skinny jeans and leggings are cute, I’d either go for a timeless, classic fit- like straight leg and wide leg- or I’d go for a slim cut trouser.  This will give a more modern appeal.  Make sure you get the correct rise for your body type.

{ STYLE TIPS } Look for a shoe that pops.  These white print shoes above are pretty rad, but a gray shoe would also look nice with these looks.

{ WORLDLY TRADITIONAL }

{ Style Tips } So, I immediately pictured this vintage fan in a home study with maps on the walls, books everywhere, and maybe some travel photos?  Warm colors give it a traditional vibe, so I went with a traditional lamp & desk.  Then, I added the Eastern inspired vases and a framed vintage map to pull together that worldly, travel vibe!

{ Style Tips } To highlight this (awesome) vintage fan, I went with a straight-forward mid-century modern living room.  The funky mobile adds character, the red lamp offers a warm pop of color, and the neutral-colored furniture keeps the overall look light and airy.

{ Style Tips } I saw this fan and instantly imagined it inside a cool, hip loft in the city.  The graffiti lamp is just simply amazing (I want it now!).  And, the stainless steel butterfly clock and red graphic rug pull together that “Urban Cool” vibe.  This is my favorite of the three.

Huge dog lover here!  Actually, I love all animals.  I grew up with cats, currently own a dog, and have always wanted to have a pet pig and parrot.  One day, hopefully!

Its The Fluoro Satchel from The Cambridge Satchel Company.  Its so classic, but the colors are edgy.  This contradiction is very attractive to me.  It comes in “normal” colors too (tan, navy, black, brown, etc.) but I think that would be a little boring considering the style is somewhat simple and conservative.  The neon is where its at!!!

• above left: Project Runway Season 9 winner, Anya Ayoung’s style is right up my alley.  Her lightweight, airy dresses are perfect for Austin’s hot weather and laid back lifestyle.  And, I love her exquisite choice of color.
• above right: These adorable watercolor paintings by Flora Douville are so sweet and fresh!  Your choice of frame can really determine the overall style, but I think they have a very modern appeal.  I found them on a post from {frolic!}.  About $35 each.  Buy/browse here.

• above left: The red drapes are from Anthropologie, but I think this is a perfect DIY project.  I’m pretty sure I want some sort of tie dye drapes for my living room.  The patterns are limitless and the project would be fairly inexpensive.

Nest Design Studio blog is written by two designers (Natalie & Maya) living in Toronto.  Inspired by design, food, & fashion, the blog is an insight to their every day lives, adventures, travels and  inspirations.  If you’re anything like me, you’ll spend a couple of hours going through each post on your first visit!

A few things about me:

• I’m an astrologist.  I do birth charts, readings, and can chart your astrological chart down to the minute!  It’s a hobby I picked up when I was 17.  15 years later, and I still have a passion for this science.  If you are interested, I have a few books and website recommendations I can send your way.
• I could listen to Christmas music year round.  For me Christmas-time begins the day after Halloween.  I put up the tree on the night before Thanksgiving.  Christmastime is the only time when people feel like being nice for no reason.  I think people should be nice all year round for no reason at all!
• I’m a feminist.  Women’s lib all the way baby!

Crisp white, classic navy, and cozy heather gray meet with red & blonde accents.  The red Greek motif and black eagle add visual interest and style.  I just love the detail on this sweater and I’m a sucker for a classic white shirt with jeans.  You can find this ensemble here.

{ STYLE TIPS }:  Every room needs at least one piece of unique, original art.  My favorite parts: dream catcher & antique Eagle Blanket!  When the large pieces of the room are classic and simple (bed, dresser, nightstands, chair) go funky with the accessories and use them to express your style.

I started with the rot iron bed to immediately lend to that rustic early American style and crisp white sheets are classic and clean.  Next, I added navy drapes & the red vintage eagle blanket to pull together the ‘red, white, & blue’ color concept.  Everything else is about adding accessories!

Inverted Triangles | How lucky are you if you can wear this?  I love this coat.  Its ideal for inverted triangle ladies.  The deep v-neck de-emphasizes your broad shoulders.  The button belt draws the eye down, away form your shoulders.  And, the peplum adds some width to your slim hips balancing out your upper body.  This coat is by Anthropology.

Apples | This coat is oh so chic!  Very little detail makes this ideal for an apple- lucky dog. The simple collar draws the eye upward.  And the lack of a belt doesn’t draw attention to your waistline.  By Eric Brinie.

Lean Rectangle | All this volume would drown out most bodies, but those with a lean rectangle figure will benefit from all the curves this coat adds to their bodies.  By Mala Brajkovic.

Pears | A super-sized collar, tie belt, and A-line cut does wonders for pear shaped ladies.  It draws the eye up, defines waist, falls away softly from hips.  By Calvin Klein.

Hourglass ladies need to uphold their shape by acknowledging their bust, waist, and hips but not overemphasizing any particular part.   V-neck, tie belt, and pockets do that beautifully.  This is from Banana Republic.

Plus sized women will benefit from this coat wonderfully.  The empire waisted coat falls softly away from their bodies while emphasising their smallest part without adding volume.

Keep in mind every woman’s body shape is unique and you may have a combination body type.  Always look for balance!  Go here to determine your body type!

What coat do you have your eye on for this fall/winter?

My heart skipped a beat when I came across this Mirit Weinstock necklace!  These shuttlecock ball feathers were dipped in 18k gold and hang from a solid gold chain.  Every wardrobe needs a statement piece, and this is it for fall.  It has that beautiful handmade feel, and the craftsmanship looks impeccable.  This is more than a necklace; it’s a piece of art!

STYLE TIP:  Styling this necklaces doesn’t get an easier.  It makes such a statement, I’d probably wear it with something simple and classic, like a solid black long-sleeved tee-shirt dress with no belt to keep it fluid.  But, gold & white are neutrals, so it works with a colorful funky ensemble as well!  Buy here.

Kono’s Surf Club Cafe

Breakfast is Lary’s favorite meal… All I have to do is hint at the idea of eating out for breakfast, and he’s on board & ready to go faster than I can get dressed – Same goes for pizza!

What we loved:

*The food came out fast for us and everyone around us.
*Our breakfast was $12.
*Portion size- perfect.
*Flavor- amazing!
*Ocean view.
*Laid back.

I ordered “French toast with Bacon”.  It was the kind of french toast that doesn’t need syrup.  Fluffy, light, topped with sweet whipped butter and powdered sugar.  The bacon was super flavorful and thick.  Who needs fancy breakfast food?  This place is perfection.

Lary ordered “Breakfast #1″, which included 3 eggs (your way), 2 slices of bacon, 1 english muffin, a huge side of cowboy potatoes, and a stack of 2 large pancakes.  No, he didn’t finish it.

Why am I telling you this secret?  I don’t know, because I surely don’t want to wait behind you on a Saturday morning… but I would for this place.

TIP:  Take a stroll down the pier.  Its literally 10 feet from Kono’s and has a great view of Pacific Ocean.
